April 29th, 2014- Today the national sports world got its justice when NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced that LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling would be banned for life from the NBA and also pay a $2.5 million dollar fine as a result of his racist comments this past weekend, however there was a much better news conference that took place approximately 11:27 am at the VMAC in Renton, WA when Earl Thomas (ET) accompanied by GM, John Schneider and Coach Pete Carroll stepped to the podium. It was at that moment that us fans (the 12th’s) knew that the rumor that ET had signed a 4 year contract extension that would make him the highest paid safety in NFL history (4 years, $40 million with $27.75 million guaranteed) had become a reality.
ET thanked everyone from top to bottom: Owner- Paul Allen, John Schneider, Pete Carroll, his secondary coaches, his teammates (Kam Chancellor and Richard Sherman were present), his family, the 12th man and even the cooks at the VMAC. “This is family to me. I love everybody in this organization. It’s not about me, it’s about the people that helped me along the way too. This is where I grew up as football player. I’m excited to keep this thing going.”
You would have never guessed that ET was coming off his first Super Bowl win. He seems so focused on what more he wants to accomplish with the Seahawks. He wants to be the best at his craft and remains 100% focused at whatever task is at hand. His leadership, competitiveness, work ethic, focus, being the ultimate team mate, and his work within the community all embodies what Pete and John’s program is all about.
Resigning ET to a 4 year extension HAD to be done especially for the most part a quiet off season. Chris Clemons, Red Bryant, Walter Thurmmond are some of the pieces from the defense that have departed but ET was the key and also the heart and soul of LOB (Legion of Boom). His motor that ranges from sideline to sideline (which Pete Carroll raved about during the press conference) contributed to the Seahawks having the number one defense in the league last year and (now that they have him locked up) many years to come. By rewarding ET showed us fans that the front office is willing to keep the core intact and reward him for what he’s worth not only to the team but also what he’s worth in the market.
Thats one down and 2 to go. There should be another press conference coming shortly, this next one should be pretty entertaining, stay tuned………
